Joaquin Phoenix on Letterman

February 12th, 2009

I came across this video of Joaquin Phoenix on Letterman and was left speechless.  Joaquin seems almost despondent and his appearance leaves something to be desired.  He’s a relatively skilled actor, but his segment on Letterman left viewers feeling confused and wishing they could offer him a comb and perhaps a razor.

Phoenix is visibly perturbed during his interview with Letterman and at one point slaps his gum onto Dave’s desk after a complaint is made about it.  Granted Letterman is not being gentle to Phoenix, but he’s also not exactly Katie Couric.  Phoenix should know better than to expect to be treated with respect when he looks like a hobo.

Could Joaquin Phoenix’s appearance on Letterman be an elaborate hoax?  TMZ seems to agree with that assessment.  They claim that his aspirations of becoming a rapper are part of his “phony stony act”.

Assuming this is a prank, I’m not sure it’s useful to his career, but it does get his story in papers across the country.  If Joaquin Phoenix wants to degrade himself on Letterman, more power to him. Free PR, anyone?

Last Night’s Nip/Tuck: Episode 5.19

Last night’s Nip/Tuck, episode 5.19, was full of surprises. The show is certainly employs a soap opera style which puts the viewer on the edge of his seat.

I couldn’t believe that Kimber would even entertain the notion of injecting collagen into Jenna’s mouth. And that Christian eventually buckled under the pressure as well.  Typical Nip/Tuck morals I suppose.

And did anyone else find it ironic the Sean hired that new anesthesiologist after his directive that he/she not just be another “piece”?

The best part of episode 5.19 has to be the man who could “pleasure himself”. It was highly amusing that someone would actually get that sort of reduction surgery.

Equally shocking was Liz’s departure. Could a main character of the show be leaving for good? We all sort of expected this day would eventually arrive, but Liz can’t really leave, can she?

Finally, it appears that Christian is dying! There must be some caveat to this, but we’ll have to wait until next week to find out.

Stay tuned for more Nip/Tuck episode posts.

SNL Cooper Bradley Episode

I’m watching last week’s episode of Saturday Night Live and am really enjoy it a lot more than the previous SNL episode. The digital short featuring T-Pain is hysterical and I loved the “I’m Gonna Sleep with Your Wife” game show.

Cooper Bradley is a great host who brings a certain energy to the show.  He’s also great on Nip/Tuck as Aidan Stone.

Perhaps SNL is like the stock market: volatile and unexpected.  You never know when a clever digital short will pop-up.

SNL Losing Steam

I’m watching a DVRed addition of this past week’s SNL, and I must say minus the band (Fleet Foxes), there’s isn’t much memorable about the show. I will continue to watch the show (today and each week), but I hope this isn’t an indication that the show is headed for a decline as the election is over and the fodder has dissipated.

Artie Lange: A Scholar and A Gentleman

Last night a co-worker and I went to Books & Books in Coral Gables for Artie Lange’s book signing. He opened with about 20 minutes of stand-up and then signed copies of Too Fat To Fish. He was hysterical! The crowd was screaming and applauding and was very rowdy. Because there were over 200 people there rather than wait for his signature, we opted to eat dinner at Sushi Maki. When we returned, the line had actually grown, so we left. But I figure we came out ahead because we have copies of the book and were able to see him live for free.

Nip/Tuck 6.2 Revisited

Ok, shoot me! This post is definitely a bit later than I had intended. This week’s Nip/Tuck was wrought with controversy and excitement. We learn that Sean can in fact walk. That Christian didn’t “accidentally” sleep with Liz. That “Indian guy”, whose name escapes me at present, receives a “mouthful” from a transvestite. And somehow Christian allows himself to be brutalized by a somewhat busted, for lack of a better term, prostitute who looked like she could use a “retread” if you catch my drift.

At any rate, the show continues to dazzle. I know I will be watching in 10 days (Jan 27) when it resumes. I’m not sure why they are taking a two-week hiatus, but que sera sera.

The Wrestler: Another Aronofsky Home Run

February 4th, 2009

Remember 2000′s Requiem for a Dream? Well, the director of that film, Darren Aronofsky, recently released another film called The Wrestler.

The Wrestler, starring Mickey Rourke and Marisa Tomei, is the story of a washed-up, once-famous, pro-wrestler named Randy “The Ram” Robinson. He wrestles on weekends when he’s not pickuping shifts at a supermarket and does pathetic signings which are frequented by 10 people at most. As expected with an Aronofsky film, it is quite depressing but well-made.

Once you adjust to the beat-up condition of Rourke’s face, you begin to appreciate how masterfully shot and acted the film is, and when the credits roll you are left feeling empathetic toward Randy who suffers most of the film. So it’s no surprise that the film one the Golden Lion Award at the 2008 Venice Film Festival.

At any rate, if you haven’t seen The Wrestler, I would highly recommend heading down to your local theater and shelling out $9 or $10. If not for the great story, at least to see Marisa Tomei strut her stuff on the stripper pole.

Joel McHale: Funnier on E!

I just saw Joel McHale at the Lincoln Theater. The show left something to be desired for two reasons: 1) The opening act was better than Joel and 2) It just wasn’t that funny.

Joel McHale is a TV personality that hosts the E! show The Soup, so it was surprising that the South Beach Comedy Festival chose him to do stand-up. He’s definitely witty and humorous at times, but he’s not much of a comedian.

He got some laughs, but mostly I was waiting for the show to end so I could get a bite to eat. I will say that he made a few good jokes about his father being too cheap and about Kim Kardashian.

I suppose the old adage, “you get what you pay for” is fairly accurate.

The moral here is watch Joel McHale on E!, but avoid him at comedy shows.

Veggie Love: PETA Ad Too Hot for TV

February 4th, 2009

According to Huliq, the above PETA-produced commercial called “Veggie Love” is being banned from the Super Bowl ad line-up because NBC felt it was inappropriate. As pointed out in the Huliq article, NBC is probably trying to avoid a wardrobe malfunction situation

Shame on you NBC! If half-nude, hot models acting inappropriately with vegetables is unfit for TV, you should probably cancel Last Call with Carson Daly. Or any of the other shows (and I’m sure there are plenty) that no one watches unless threatened with terrorist-like torture.

I viewed the Veggie Love ad and must say I was quite moved. It had the gratuitous nudity of a Tarantino flick with the class of a luxury car :30 spot. Honestly, it doesn’t show anymore skin than say a model on the cover of Sports Illustrated and is PG13 at best.

To ad insult to injury, NBC which is hosting the Super Bowl is promoting the ad on it’s website! So it’s ok to watch the video online (where children can’t find it) but not on TV? They are way off-base here.

So I implore you, write NBC and tell those unoriginal idiots that the Veggie Love ad must be aired!

Nip/Tuck Season 5 Part II

Correction: this current season of the hit FX show, Nip/Tuck, is actually a continuation of season five. So technically, this current season is five, part II, not six, as I has originally thought.
