Daylight Savings Time is Awful

Daylight savings time is awful. At least in the spring when you lose an hour. Think that over for a minute. You’re minding your own business, and then bam! You wake up at 7:15am, except it’s actually 6:15am! The sun’s barely risen and already your day has begun.

How did this horrid tradition begin? According to Wikipedia, Daylight savings time (DST) was conceived in 1907 by the English builder William Willett. Why did he have this ingenious idea? He didn’t appreciate ending his golf game at dusk and also notice many Londoners slept during the summer. Wow, those are pressing issues. Thanks, Will.

DST isn’t without it’s benefits (although they are few). Certain areas such as sporting events and retail thrive in sunlight and therefore are helped by DST. But it’s not all fun.

As Wikipedia explains, “although an early goal of DST was to reduce evening usage of incandescent lighting, formerly a primary use of electricity,modern heating and cooling usage patterns differ greatly, and research about how DST currently affects energy use is limited and often contradictory.” In other words, daylight savings time doesn’t necessarily reduce energy consumption.

I’m still cranky from losing sleep, so I’m a bit biased, but I don’t believe DST is necessary. We should adjust our schedules, not our clocks, if we need more light.

Something for Nothing: Free Rice

A friend of mine pointed this site out to me called Free Rice. It’s basically a word game in which players answer multiple choice questions about the definitions of various terms. Great, you say. But what does that have to do with food? It’s simple: Free Rice donates 10 grains of rice to the United Nations World Food Program for each correct answer.

Don’t accept imitators! There’s another blog called Storybook Vacations on WordPress with the URL storybookvacations.wordpress.com that is a clone of my site (poorly done at best). The site is a violation of my copyright, and was not produced under my supervision or permission. Don’t visit the site!

Storybookvacations.wordpress.com is merely an attempt to steal my thunder and detract visitors from my blog, the rightful Storybook Vacations.

It is disappointing that imitators would corrupt my concept of a travel blog, but these things do happen. I am confident that if you are a loyal reader you won’t visit storybookvacations.wordpress.com.

Meditate the Day Away, Meditation

In today’s busy world, people eat fast food, have working lunches, bring laptops on vacation, and generally are on the go. But maybe we should stop once in a while to meditate on life. After all, if you don’t stop and smell the roses, you can miss out on great things.

I was supposed to meditate today, but the center I went to was closed. Probably just another victim of the failing economy. I did end up having a great lunch at Miss Yip, so it wasn’t a complete waste.

But I digress. My associate, Cassandra, has written a great post about a newly-opened 39,000 sq ft, meditation center in Tennessee. If you plan to travel to the area, I suggest you check it out.
